Ryukyu Culture Site of the Month
Ona Gusuku (Ona Castle) It was built in the latter part of the 13th century and was
the main gate guard castle for the back gate of Urasoe Castle. At the northern end of
the castle a moat, a very unique feature for Okinawan castles, lay between the two
castles. Until Sho Hashi moved the kingdom to Shuri, the Ona castle stood proudly to
be the guardian castle for Urasoe Gusuku. After that, the castle walls were moved to
Shuri or used to build some parts of the city of Urasoe.
